Roberta Murrant and Jean Down form the partnership of Studio Three Fibre Arts now 18 years strong. Their work embodies the use of historic weave structures and natural fibres, overlaid with modern techniques including original computer designs.

Their collaborations occur in two intertwined spheres. First, they discuss colour combinations and how to make these more innovative and pleasing. Then the actual weaving is done in their respective studios. It is the interplay that keep their partnership fresh.

Roberta’s projects include hand-woven and hand-dyed silky scarves and lacey silk shawls.  She is particularly interested in using computer software to build on traditional weaving techniques.

Jean’s primary interest is historical weaves and using traditional designs in a modern context. Her creations include cotton table runners inspired by traditional designs, textured wool and silk scarves and woolly triangular shawls.

Roberta: “Many people have helped me over the years and as I age it is imperative that I pass on the knowledge I have.”

Jean: “I will never in my lifetime finish everything I want to weave, which is fine because I am not content to weave the same things over and over.”
